Our clients often seek advice on which type of boat to choose for their sailing vacation, especially if they are not experienced sailors or have no specific preference. The debate between catamarans and monohulls is a common one, as different charterers prioritiσe different aspects. Here is a brief comparison to help our clients make an informed decision:

Stability

One major advantage of a catamaran over a monohull is its stability, making it easier to walk around on deck and within the interior of the yacht while underway. This is particularly beneficial for families with young children or seniors. Additionally, those prone to seasickness will feel the effects of motion much less aboard a catamaran.

Manoeuvrability

On the other hand, monohulls are more fun! They are more manoeuvrable and faster to respond to the helm than catamarans. They tend to slice through the water effortlessly and without the slapping that some catamarans produce, providing a more exhilarating sailing experience. In addition, if you're visiting a crowded marina where finding a place to dock is difficult, using a monohull boat may be more comfortable.

External Spaces

External spaces on catamarans are usually more spacious, with a trampoline for sunbathing or lounging. In the cockpit area, the catamarans have a more significant advantage. It is designed like a lounge, and you can easily enjoy dinner or a drink by popping in and out to the galley without having to fold the cockpit table or ask the person next to them to make way.

However, things are changing, and monohull builders are catching up and introducing significantly larger cockpits. A few years back, we were even introduced to a new term; the monomarans. These are monohulls that have a specific emphasis on external spaces.

Internal Spaces

Monohulls typically have their main living spaces situated below the waterline. In some cases, people not used to living onboard can find this uncomfortable. Similarly, ventilation throughout the boat can also present some challenges on still nights. When it comes to comparing cabins in monohulls and catamarans, the standard cabins in catamarans tend to outshine those

Cost

When considering the cost of chartering a boat, monohulls generally have lower prices, especially if the primary concern is the number of sleeping spaces. However, as the availability of catamarans increases, older models are becoming more competitive in pricing. It is important to note that catamarans may have higher fuel and mooring fees.
